TreeFolks partners with municipalities, non-governmental organizations and other groups to give people opportunities to improve their communities through tree planting in public parks. During the 2011/12 tree planting season (October – March), TreeFolks partnered with Austin Urban Forestry Program to plant native saplings in urban preserves and with Travis County Parks to plant native saplings at Milton Reimer’s Ranch Park. Due to persistent drought conditions, we chose to focus our efforts on planting young, native trees that are well adapted to the central Texas climate and that don’t require supplemental irrigation. These small trees often grow faster and stronger because they are free from many of the problems that larger trees experience after transplanting. Planting saplings is fun and really, really easy! Summer is on it’s way, so we are done planting trees for the 2011/12 season. We will begin planting trees again in October 2012. If you’d like receive email notification of opportunities to volunteer by planting or mulching trees in public parks, please sign up here.
