What are Carbon+ Credits?
One carbon credit represents one metric ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) that has been removed, or “sequestered,” from the atmosphere. The trees that we plant through the Central Texas Floodplain Reforestation Program (CTFRP) store carbon in their trunks, branches, and roots while also contributing to the environment’s well-being in other ways. That is where the “+” in “Carbon+” credits comes in. As the trees we plant grow, they provide additional “co-benefits” that reduce regional heating and cooling costs, intercept rainwater, improve air quality, and increase biodiversity.
Each acre we plant through CTFRP is estimated to sequester 106.7 metric tons of CO₂ over 25 years. We work with City Forest Credits, a third-party carbon credit registry, to verify our Carbon+ Credit projects and quantify the co-benefits. All proceeds from Carbon+ Credit sales go directly back into the program to help cover the costs of future plantings. By purchasing our credits, you will not only offset your own carbon footprint but also contribute to reforesting sensitive waterways in Central Texas!
Example activities that produce 1 metric ton of CO₂:
- A one-way flight from Austin to London (per passenger)
- 270 days of heating and cooling the average house in Austin, TX
- Running your refrigerator for 6 years
